Year: 2014
Performance & Direction: Yuta (Poi Lab)
Filming: Taku
Overview
In 2014, Yuta created a groundbreaking video using the "Graphic Poi 72" by Apixeltoys and the original Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, exploring the potential of LED poi for visual afterimage effects.
This project marked one of the first serious attempts to visually "draw" with light trails in real space, at a time when terms like "Visual Poi" or "LED Poi Performance" were barely known. The work stands as a pioneering milestone in performance technology.
Inspiration
The concept was inspired by CG neon light trails seen at the Paris Motor Show earlier that year. Wanting to realize such effects in live performance, Yuta went through a rigorous process of experimentation to bring the idea to life.
Commercial Recognition
This visually striking piece eventually caught the attention of a commercial director, leading to its use in a national TV commercial for NTT Docomo.
Note
*Graphic Poi and Visual Poi are different products from different manufacturers. As of 2022, Graphic Poi is no longer in production.
