Your First Visual Poi Performance

How to Perform with Visual Poi

Visual poi allows for more beautiful performances by mastering various techniques. While visually impressive moves are often difficult, the impact of your performance directly reflects the results of your practice.

Poi has a mysterious charm where mastering a new trick is incredibly exhilarating, making you want to learn more and more. Let's have fun practicing and put on an amazing performance!

1
Mastering Basic Skills with Regular Poi

Estimated Lessons: 90 min x 1~3 Lesson

You'll use regular poi, not the stick type. Have fun learning basic skills with poi that won't hurt much if you hit yourself.

Estimated Lessons and Achievable Skills (1 Lesson 90min)
3-Beat Weave Forward
Estimated lessons needed for mastery: 1
3-Beat Weave Backward
Estimated lessons needed for mastery: 1
3-Beat Weave Turn
Estimated lessons needed for mastery: 1~2 lessons
*Prior mastery of 3-beat weave forward and backward is required
Windmill
Estimated lessons needed for mastery: 1~2 lessons (separate from weaves)

After basic skill instruction with practice poi, please allow about one week for self-practice. Even if you remember how to do a trick, it takes about one week of practicing for about 10 minutes every day to be able to spin it naturally.
If you can spin a trick naturally, you can also spin it with stick poi. However, if you practice an unfamiliar trick with stick poi, it's easy to hit yourself, and it hurts.

If basic skill instruction and stick poi practice are on the same day, please expect to only be able to spin tricks one or two levels below what you've just learned with stick poi.

Practice with Stick-Type Poi

Estimated Lessons: 90 min x 1 Lesson

トウモロコシポイ

You'll practice with a stick-shaped poi, just like a visual poi.

Here, you'll get used to the balance of the stick type and learn characteristic movements unique to stick-shaped poi.

3
Choreography Instruction

Estimated Lessons: 90 min x 1 Lesson

トウモロコシポイ

You'll learn choreography using the techniques you've mastered so far.

To achieve higher quality, we recommend separating technical practice days from choreography instruction days. If you learn new tricks and choreography all in one day, it will require a lot of focus and patience.

Once you receive the choreography, practice until your body remembers it.

4
Visual Poi Rehearsal

Estimated Sessions: 1~2 times
Audio, Lighting, Stage Manager, and Video Staff presence recommended

RH

You'll practice with the poi lit up.

You'll need to adjust the timing of the activation, coordinate with other lighting and sound staff, and if you're filming, adjust the camera. If program adjustments are needed due to the stage or filming, we might not be able to accommodate them on the day of the show. Please allow plenty of time for rehearsals.

Other LED Poi

Visual poi requires mastering basic poi skills first, then stick poi skills, so it takes more than three weeks of practice for a full performance.

If you have limited time before your performance, or if you're worried about injuries, we recommend "Podpoi," an LED poi that even kids can enjoy spinning, with beautiful built-in light patterns.

If you perform with Podpoi, you won't need to do the "Practice with Stick-Type Poi" step mentioned above.

While Podpoi may have less light output compared to Visual Poi or FT Poi, the beautiful light patterns meticulously crafted by Flowtoys (the manufacturer) Prisna and Sean are so refined that no other company can match them! Also, with the correct camera settings and lighting, you can achieve a performance where both the performer and the poi truly shine. Please contact us for detailed setup instructions.

The "How to Spin Poi" page introduces techniques used in performances. Please take a look at that too.
